Casa Moderna is the premier home and design expo in Latin America, where innovative architecture and interior design meet in a celebration of modern living. Set against Mexico City’s lively cultural backdrop, the 2025 event, under the Formas Eternas (Eternal Forms) theme, explores the fusion of local artistry and contemporary design.
THE CONCEPT
Formas Eternas (External Forms) is the creative concept that explores the role of clay as a timeless connection between Mexico’s artisanal heritage and contemporary design. Inspired by everyday household objects, this work evokes both emotion and familiarity, blending tradition with modern expression.
Through my research into the Mexican construction and design industry, I identified a common thread: the continued use of clay in contemporary homes, both as a cultural symbol and as a practical building material in Latin America. I wanted to honour this material for its enduring presence and versatility—showcasing how it can adapt and evolve, bridging the past, present, and future.
To bring the concept to life, everyday items were encased in a thin layer of red clay. Once dried, they were photographed both individually and as sculptural compositions, with digital retouching in Photoshop to enhance the visual impact.
Colour played a significant role in my approach. While drawing inspiration from Mexican interiors, I sought to avoid clichés and appeal to a more refined, local audience. The final palette considers 2025 interior design trends, blending the colours of the Mexican landscape—specifically the soft yellows and pale blues of the Baja desert, alongside the vivid Yves Klein Blue and Burgundy featured on the exterior of La Casa Azul, Frida Kahlo’s home in Mexico City.
